An unusual delivery of a baby girl with 26 fingers and toes was reported in India last weekend.
Doctors in the Kaman community health center
in Deeg district, Rajasthan confirmed that an infant was born there with seven
fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot on Sunday.
The case is particularly rare since most hand abnormalities in newborns affect one hand. The genetic condition, called polydactyly, occurs in approximately one out of every 500 to 1,000 kids.
“There is no harm or
side effect of this condition on the body,” said Dr. B.S. Soni from the
hospital.
Extra fingers
can be removed when the affected child gets 1 or 2 years old to avoid any
future problems, doctors said.
